Philip holds an engineering degree from Carnegie Mellon University and an MBA from the University of Chicago. He spent 33 years in the software industry. He helped to found one of the first software companies in the late 1960s, serving in sales, engineering and management positions until it was acquired in 1982 by the company that was to become SunGard Data Systems. He then served in senior executive management positions with SunGard until he retired in 2002.
SunGard was created in 1983 from five IT companies acquired from Sun Oil Company in a leveraged buy out. Mr. Dowd was president of one of those companies. SunGard went public in 1986 and began a “roll-up” of IT companies in its sector. Over the next 20 years it acquired over 100 IT companies and grew its revenues from $30 million at inception in 1984 to over $1.5 billion. During that time Mr. Dowd went from company CEO to Group CEO with responsibility for 12 companies, to Division CEO with responsibility for several Groups. In addition to domestic U.S. business, Phil oversaw operations in Europe, Australia and Latin America and acquired businesses in Australia. Just before he retired, Mr. Dowd controlled about 40% of the company, which was then sold a few years after his retirement.
Phil is currently a trustee at Carnegie Mellon University and an active angel investor and philanthropist in Chicago.
